Could Dust Mites Be The Culprit?

Household Dust Mites

Allergy season is once again in full swing and while it would be natural to blame the usual culprits of pollen and grass for your Cavalier King Charles’ runny eyes, sneezing, and frequent licking, – don’t discount that dust mites could be playing a role. Dogs, like humans, can have dust allergies … more specifically, the body parts and droppings of the millions of dust mites living in every person’s home.

Dust mites are tiny creatures that live everywhere from carpets and curtains to sofas and bedding – including your dog’s bed. They are typically harmless because they feed on the dead skin cells we all shed daily, but prolonged exposure to dust mites can eventually trigger allergic reactions in both humans and dogs.

If your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel exhibits signs of a dust allergy – coughing, sneezing, runny eyes, excessive scratching, frequent licking, or trouble breathing – be sure to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. If a dust mite allergy is the diagnosis, your vet may prescribe a topical treatment to lessen the skin discomfort and possibly even a medication, such as antihistamines or corticosteroids, to help manage the internal symptoms.
