Expect An Extended Flea & Tick Season in 2017

Gillcrest Cavalier King Charles Spaniels Fleas-Ticks

With record high temperatures this year, it’s natural to expect that the typical ‘May through September’ flea and tick season will extend a little longer than usual.

Because they thrive best at levels of high humidity that we don’t have here in Southern California, we’re fortunate to not have the rampant tick problem found in eastern and southeastern states.   This is particularly true this year because scientists have predicted that 2017 will be the worst tick season in years.  For valuable information about ticks and the very dangerous Lyme disease they carry, you may be interested in this article on the Huffington Post … accessible by CLICKING HERE.

Fleas, on the other hand, are not uncommon in our part of the country and thrive virtually everywhere — from dark places around your home, in gardens and hedges and as you would expect, on the canine friends your dog will encounter at the local dog park!

If flea control is necessary for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, you might consider Frontline Plus, as it seems to be among the safest options available at the consumer level.

If you find yourself with an infestation at home, your best immediate course of action is to wash and dry your Cavalier’s bedding on an extremely high heat (as this will tend to kill both fleas and ticks, as well as their eggs.   And of course, laundering your clothes is always advised if you’ve been outside in a tick & flea-friendly area!
