Spring Has Sprung … And So Have Allergies!

Gillcrest Cavaliers Kings Charles Spaniels Spring AllergiesWith the arrival of Spring this week, allergy season won’t be far behind and some dogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels included, are just as susceptible to reactions to airborne allergens as humans … sometimes more so!

The most common environmental allergens that will produce a reaction in dogs include dust mites, fleas, molds and pollens from grasses, trees, weeds, and flowers – all of which will begin coming into season over the next few weeks and months.

With that in mind, you will want to be on the lookout for any signs of allergies with your Cavalier – from the most obvious symptoms like excessive itching and scratching to more subtle signs like licking or scratching of the feet.

Naturally, increased indoor confinement is one of the best solutions – but it’s rarely a practical one and sometimes, simply impossible. But wiping your Cavalier’s coat down with a damp washcloth after being outside can help remove allergens and more frequent bathing (perhaps with a specialized shampoo, rinse, or conditioner) will certainly help alleviate the problem further.

Most importantly however, is to visit your veterinarian as soon as you suspect that your dog may be suffering from an allergy – not only for the comfort and well-being of your Cavalier, but for their good health, as well!
